Raising Money for Change

October - MONTH OF FEAR

October was C-Roots' MONTH OF FEAR where GBM's were held on different phobias that are affecting our society today. Specifically they focused on three ideas.

1. xen·o·pho·bi·a (noun): Intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries.

Discussing immigrant rights, xenophobia in America, and the DREAM Act.

2.ho·mo·pho·bi·a (noun): An extreme and irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people.

het·er·o·sex·ism (noun): Discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the norm.

Joined by a few outside facilitators to unpack homophobia, heterosexism and the LGBT community's ongoing struggle for acceptance.

3. Fear of the Police

What are the police there for?

We'll be talking about our relationship to law enforcement, public safety and knowing your rights as a student and as a community member at-large.

Election Night Marathon

Along with the Black Student Union, Community Roots hosted  a Election Night Marathon for students to come watch the election on Tuesday November 6th. The election night was a fun and social way to get students to watch the election. Food was served and it was held in the Nyumburu multipurpose room.

Above, students show their excitment when President Barack Obama is re-elected.

We Are TROY DAVIS

Troy Anthony Davis was convicted of the August 19, 1989, murder of white police officer Mark MacPhail. In 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered that an evidentiary hearing be conducted to examine alleged recantations by trial witnesses and determine if clear and convincing evidence existed to prove Davis' innocence.

On August 24, 2010, the conviction was upheld, with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia declaring, "Davis is not innocent." Davis has been on death row in Georgia since 1991.

On September 19, 2011, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles heard appeals from the defendant in a final attempt to gain clemency in Davis' case. Despite hours of testimonies, the Board denied Davis' appeal and decided to follow through with an execution.

Dream Act Rally 10/25/12

Community Roots, along with many other organizations spent many hours raising awareness about the Dream Act. C-roots, specifically held a very successful GBM in the Nyumburu multi-purpose room addressing the issue and changing the way people thought about the Dream Act by understand xenophobia. Then on October 25th C-roots rallied to encourage people to vote for question 4 on the Maryland ballot.
